To ponder: compare the proofs of "unique factorization for Z" vs "PID => UFD". In the former, we can induct on the size of "unfactored part" (it shrinks) whereas in the PID case we note that the unfactored part grows as a set (but the growth stops - why?) Another difference: in the latter we must work a bit harder to show existence of divisibility by an irreducible.
